Our founder Lace Watkins began Lace on Race as a community with intention, believing that anti-racist work is most effectively and reliably done by people with deep awareness of their own agency, capacity, and volition, working together in strong and healthy relationships. Here, internal work IS work, and is crucial to becoming a person who can be counted on for a lifetime of anti-racist action, not just a flash in the pan sparked by the latest news cycle.

We consider financial engagement central to a robust and effective anti-racist praxis. We believe that people working towards anti-racism and racial equity MUST have “skin in the game”. For white people especially, the “skin” available to put out there are the resources accumulated through privilege and centuries of racial exploitation. That is why we consider financial engagement an integral part of fulfilling our mission. Our Western Star is our commitment to engage financially in support of the health of our organization , as well as to provide first fruits to our Community Partners and the Lace on Race Mental and Emotional Health Fund.
