From our ongoing series on relational ethics.

Additional commentary from Lace:

Even as we are confronting our own pain points, eventually, ideally, we pivot and leverage and flex our own experience of pain so that we can most effectively meet the Other in front of us with curiosity, compassion, and most importantly, with Hesed.

I want you to think about two things: firstly, I invite you to think about what that looks like when that pain that you feel in your own psyche is used for good; not just for self-reflection, and certainly not for self-indulgence, but towards what can only be called true empathy.

This is where Hesed can be found.

Secondly, and perhaps even more importantly, I am noticing that I have not seen anyone speak to how we treat our icons and our prophetic voices.

Why *did* Ruby have to hold a fundraiser?

Why do we treat those who we say we revere as badly as we do, and how does that pour salt into an already gaping wound?

Do you think anyone has *ever* asked Ms. Sales herself the crucial question of:

‘Where *Does* It Hurt, Ruby?’

Quietly, on a personal note, I can count on my two hands how many people (excluding our amazing miscreants) have asked me that in these past months.

And still have a few fingers left over.

Confront this.

How do you think it lands?

This is where we have the opportunity to be balms–to Ruby, absolutely; but also to every other woman we say we stand for and with.

For whom have you been a balm?
