Racial Equity Anti Hero: Amy Siskind

Intro to Series: laceonrace.com/2021/02/04/racial-equity-anti-hero-series/

Tiffany Washington talks her shit from the backwoods of Alabama. Her work appears on Facebook because she’s already been rejected by The Root.

Is it white feminism Friday yet? Welp, let’s get started early.
Today, in Black History, we remind folks that white supremacist having rallies wasn’t even a thing until Trump took office. Oh, they were? Are you sure? Wait………you mean to tell me, on this, white Jesus’ holy day, that racism was alive and well before Trump took office?
This is what happens when you don’t have black friends, Amy Siskind.
You see, white feminism stands by women like Sarah Palin before they’ll support men like Barack Obama.
White feminism still supports racist like John McCain, because there is no harm in them admiring a racist asshole.
White feminism then attacks the black women who call them on their hypocrisy because white feminism makes them delicate little flowers that are beyond criticism. And you don’t want them tears to come flowing: the tears of these women have the power to kill.
But go on, tell us more about how hoooorible Trump is and how safe you are. At least he doesn’t pretend to be my friend only to come in my house and clog my septic system with your special brand of bullshit.

I’ve never heard of her, until reading this. Sarah Palin, a walking disaster – a dangerous, ill equipped, very racist human being, who had no business leading a walk through the park, let alone, holding public office. As for being a Vice Presidential pick: I. Cant. Even. Go. There. But I am aware of who chose her, or well, whose campaign chose her. McCain – get the same description as Palin.

I hadn’t heard of Amy either. In my research I found the same information. Savior of women and women’s equality expert?!? I’d imagine that means white womens equality expert. I need to make sure I research people fully. This series has reminded me of that fact.

It sounds like you are talking about a specific incident with Amy that I did not find in my reading. I am not surprised that she would follow this pattern of behavior too. All the other pieces were there to indicate that she would.

I had not heard of this woman before either so I had to go read about her. The specifics about her are new to me, but more generally her seeing (white) women as the ubervictims and ignoring or diminishing other forms of disbelieving is very familiar. I can look back on the time in my life when I thought and behaved very similarly. I must continue to be in Eye to eye relationships with people who can support me in staying oriented to the North Star.

I had never heard of Amy Siskind before today, so needed to go do some reading. It sounds like what went down is a lot of what we have seen in this space when white liberal women are called in and then respond with lack of emotion regulation, flounce, block, and center. We’ve seen this play out so many times here. I remember feeling shock the first time or two I saw it play out when I was newly here, not willing yet to take the plank out of my own eyes that this is the exhausting daily reality for people of color. I’ve learned here the daily practice of holding my own hand, looking for when I start to slide towards those old violent habits. It’s a moment to moment practice, I’ve learned, similar to muscles, which when unused atrophy.
