Lace on Race Update September 24, 2020

This week has brought devastating news. The Black community is reeling.

So much to process, to grieve, to incorporate.

For most of us, however, there is no space for processing emotions and reactions.

We have to work, and to hold it together in workplaces ignorant or even hostile to our pain and our needs.

I, as a Black woman, feel this acutely, and also feel it for women who cannot take time off, who have jobs that are not amenable to making room for this tragedy in Black women’s lives.

That is where we come in. Lace on Race is developing a fund that will allow Black women to find time for themselves in authentic, healing self care. To be able to stop, to reflect, to rest. To be able to grieve, to mourn, to commiserate with their sisters.

Their workplaces will not afford them this. But we can. The Lace on Race Emotional and Mental Health Fund we are establishing this week is another Rapid Response. Your community members are devastated and hurting. We have seen so many offerings of nebulous shared grief and support. This is a way to look sisters in the eye and stand with them in a tangible way.

Lace and her Team would like to welcome new walkers! We hope you find your time here challenging, exhorting, and that you find durable and reliable community here, all in the service of the North Star of Lace on Race which is to lessen and mitigate the harm endured by Black and brown people perpetuated by white people.  Be sure to read the Guidelines; they will help you to navigate this space best. We also want to welcome our newest Sustainer Circle members. Sustainer Circle members don’t get more; more is expected of them, as they lean into enhanced roles in the LoR community.

Part of adding more transparency and ease as you walk with the Lace on Race community is our desire to post a regular update. Each update will highlight the prominent posts that are important for you to read and engage with, the status of budget for the month, and our featured organizations for the month.

For those of you who want to become Sustainers, or who consider yourselves Sustainers but have yet to fill out the form for 2020, let us know, and we’ll walk you through the process.

A sustainer is someone who has been consistently in the Lace on Race Community for 6 months or more and is committed to financially sustaining this space and regularly engaging in the community. Our Sustainer Circle is not about perks or access to exclusive content. Rather, it is about another level of accountability and responsibility. As a Sustainer, you have spent time in the community, practice Kind Candor, and are ready to walk consistently with fellow community members.

Cross-posted – Engaged and shared publically. Just saw this yesterday and aware this is not as rapid a response as needed, but grateful for the opportunity to partner with this effort.

I am excited by the Lace on Race Emotional and Mental Health Fund, and grateful for the opportunity to stand with sisters in a tangible way during this grief, in addition to doing so in personal relationships however I can.

I engaged financially via two separate contributions and just wanted to specify that I intended both to be undesignated. Please distribute the funds as you see fit. I’m proud to be part of this community who sees these needs and steps up to meet them as a critical part of our praxis. Fulfilling my monthly financial commitment as a sustainer in training is slowly changing my attachment to money and resources so that my budget better reflects the values I say I have.

Mental and emotional health is such an individual thing, but is almost always improved by a sense of community. Dollars alone generally don’t contribute to a sense of community, but sometimes, it seems like all I can offer. It’s a place to start, not stop. I will do my best to contribute to a sense of community at LoR, working to mitigate the harm endured by black and brown people, perpetuated by white people like me.

I look forward to contributing to the new Emotional and Mental Health fund. I want to be supportive to the Black community and all they are experiencing and holding but also am learning about that nebulous part, and how my actions can land and impact people differently. This provides a tangible way to provide meaningful impact.

I’d like to ask you to consider your choice of the word help. Have you read much of what Lace has written about financial engagement in this space?
