Hey all. I am definitely planning on sharing more today–

but I have to hang this here.

Listen. If you have any ambivalence , any at all, about contributing to Lace on Race, simply don’t. (Yes, this is going against what I said earlier today and what I will say later. Bear with me.)

Someone decided that they wanted their contribution back. No problem. Happy to do it. But disputing through paypal resulted in a net loss of $20.00. A small sum, but if everyone did it, that would be daunting. And paypal keeps track. This was more than a bit harmful.

So seriously. Think before you hit donate. And also think about what that move might mean as you ponder it from the lens of this space–what it means in terms of race; what it means in terms of labor. And this as well: if you think that the content is more important and valuable than the creator of said content, welp.

Now you have a perfect working knowledge of the historical relationship between Black production and white consumption since the very first slave ship docked in the Americas.

I am really feeling some kind of way about this. I need to go off and think long and hard before I post again.

Talking about money, and adding a racial analysis, is incendiary stuff. Wanna be sure I do it well. And I want to be heard–and this too: I *don’t* want to perpetuate a centuries long toxic racial dynamic. This is important, and all of you who like and heart and share but don’t get the gist of just why your bringing your skin into the game, and sticking around for the long haul are vital and crucial; those of you who are annoyed that I keep flogging this, are engaging in adventures of missing the point of this entire community.

But I mean it. If you are not sure, err on the side of caution. Your waffling has a price (actually waffling exacts a price on most things). But also think about why you are here and what your choice truly means. Remember–you self selected in.

All this does mean that those of you who do see value in this space and want to insure its sustainability will be the ones who fill the gaps for those who are on the fence. Hopefully good content, internal movement, and authentic community will influence and ultimately change them.

Meanwhile, if you are not sure you want to help, at minimum please do not commit harm.
