Hey Community that I deeply love:

A quick word on activism: This work we are doing with Macy’s is important. We have the opportunity to make real change in the policies and the culture of a multi-billion dollar company, and make life better for thousands of employees and million of customers. I am awed and humbled that we get to do this. (Not awed and humbled by the trauma, but I am not dealing with that quite yet.)

This work is, also, well, tedious. Write a post, hurry up and wait for their response, try to think a few steps ahead, do your best to curry support with allies, try not to worry about practical, tangible things, write some more, keep my supporters informed and engaged…

Not very exciting stuff, I know.

But crucial.

What I am trying to help you affirm and internalize in your own respective walks is just how *not exciting* some of this work is.

And how anonymous.

I think the odds are low that there will be a ‘Lace on Race’ Memorial Plaque affixed to the facades of the hundereds of Macy’s stores.

The people we are standing with and advocating for will never know our names.

But their lives will have changed because of us.

That makes me a little misty.

This is the work. Tedious, boring, fame-free.

Glad you’re with me.

Support us in this work, if you feel led. Help us to continue to be boring.

For us, liberation is found in the tedium.

With love,

Your Lace
