Another important topic that we at Lace on Race will consider and confront head on: that of the concept of ‘lanes’, and embedded in that construct, the concept of identity.
i am presenting (embedded in comments) a compilation of comments from people, culled by the New York Times, on the issue of speaking from a place of stated identity, which, to me, seems very similar to the concept of ‘intersections’ and ‘lanes’ that we in online and offline social justice communities often refer to when making individual and collective discernments of exactly *who* can speak to *what*.
This is an important conversation; one I have to navigate as an substance abuse counselor with no substance abuse issues. Do I have a right to speak to the subject of addiction, when I have not had that particular struggle? Do other struggles I have had allow me to generalize, and thusly, equip and ‘allow’ me to speak of things of which I have no immediate first hand experience?
As always, I can see multiple angles. I’d like to hear yours.
Do read the article, which does include discrete viewpoints, and please also do share your own.
As always–this robust reflection and discourse happens only because you help make it so. Please contribute to the community of Lace on Race, to keep it viable, healthy, and moving the conversation forward.
