People, in response to posts about police overreach, often ask what it is that they can tangibly do?
Welp.
Embedded in the comments of her original post, Hypatia Tiberius MacAllasdair gave a step by step recipe as to how to engage with police regarding your concerns about the issue. They are so concise and so spot on, I am breaking it out into a separate post below.
So many of you, here and in other online racial justice spaces seem to be at a loss regarding ‘next steps’.
Here you are.
Again, my deep thanks to my colleague for her gracious engagement with us.
” My usual first step is identifying the public complaints department of the police department, the office of the chief of police, my municipal elected representative, and my state elected representative. Once I’ve done that, I reach out to their offices and tell them my concerns about racial bias in policing and tell them it is a really important election year issue for me. The folks that work in those offices should be able to answer your questions about what steps are being taken to move toward a community policing model, so you should definitely ask them what they’re doing to make that shift. Then I usually let folks in my circle know what my experience was like talking to these public servants and ask them to do the same. ”
You all say you want concrete praxis. Let’s see what you do with it.
