EDUCATORS AND SOCIAL WORKERS
PARTICULARLY ENCOURAGED*
What I wrote on Kate’s page. Let’s talk about this. Let’s talk about the role of educators, and how crucial to be in alignment with values, and the absolute necessity of a durable praxis.
————————–
To those of watching this from the cheep seats, and we know you’re there–really think and reflect deeply at what went down. Everyone knows that Kate’s framing just now is false.
I have utterly given up on Kate.
But, oddly, not at all of you. This is what it looks like when your racial justice muscles are weak, and your praxis is nonexistent.
I have to assume that not all of you are like what you saw displayed: standing for black lives *until* actual black lives are at stake.
I also assume this: that the bulk of you are educators or social workers of some kind.
This is where I really want to bring a point home. You have such power and influence. You can choose to flex and leverage your power for good, or you can be Kate.
I have absolutely no doubt that who she has shown herself to be here and at Lace on Race is who she is in the classroom.
That is chilling. And it cannot stand.
Black and brown young minds deserve better. So do white minds, who will perpetuate the same violence and derision and contempt that she and Dr. Golden showed–*because they are the ones teaching them.*
Sociology and social work are under fire these; particularly in upstate New York, for exactly the racism and contempt and bad practice and praxis that has been exhibited here. That they are educators galls me no end.
Lessons will be learned here. And changes will come.
But not from them. And not today.
And to Kate’s friends and colleagues: you can no longer say you don’t know the woman you align yourself with.
