So this is a bit of a ‘niche’ post, at involves a fair amount of back story, but it is something that Mark Van Steenwyk and I mentioned on our Transmission: Radical Spirituality in Uncertain Times episode on the Christian Left. Basically a wonderful, powerful, Black woman, Lace Janine Watkins, who runs Lace on Race challenged the capitalist and racist use of John Lewis’ words to make money off of tee shirts and hats on The Christian Left FB site. Things went downhill from there, and now these white guys, who want to be seen as “Progressive” Christians have found a lawyer to try and shut her up. There are just so many things that are sad and wrong with this, but the one thing that does keep rolling around in my mind is how white people cannot seem to tolerate the LEAST amount of challenge or disruption to their precious view of themselves without a violent reaction. This continues to reveal how bad we are at truly getting the harm and violence that we and our world has done, and continues to do, to Black people. Somehow, I believe, we need to get a grip on this and change.
