This happened with the County of San Diego.
I was able to retire from my job after 25 years because, and only because, I had been lucky enough to start with the county only a few years before the county, *with the collusion of SEIU*, put in a brutal tiered system.
And not just any two-tier system.
By the time I left almost exactly a year ago I think there were four or five tears; the newest of which basically has no real pension system. It’s basically a 401k.
Those of us lucky enough to have pensions worked *and work* right alongside those for whom the carrot at the end of the tunnels defined benefit payout- was but a mirage.
The argument was and is that County work is still better and also more stable than most work in private sector.
So?
That is an incomplete a disingenuous argument.
It is not lost on me that, for the rest of my life, the modest but very real pension that I receive every month is indeed on the backs of those who came after me.
This is a moral issue.
