Like so many other people of African American Heritage, I also have Native American Heritage, but I am not on any official roll even though my grandmother was born on the reservation, and that’s true for most African-Americans.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs intentionally, and sometimes officially, excluded African-Americans for the longest time.
So while I’m quietly pleased about this development, I know that most people who look like me, who also have have indigenous Heritage, will, most likely, not benefit from this new policy.
I hope that the historical exclusion was talked about when the policy was developed and that they worked to acknowledge and then lessened and mitigated the probable harm to this particular population based upon the historical context.
Somehow I doubt that they did.
So, yay, but a muted yay.
