I’m not so sure.

Most of the Boomers and Gen X white people are the same white people who, best case, were passive about the gains made by the Civil Rights Movement, and by extension, the women’s rights movement.

They did not feel that they had to protect what they already felt was inviolate.

At worst, they were actively opposed to the gains made, and they passed that dynamic on to their children and grandchildren.

*It was this cohort that did the heavy lifting when it came to undermining and undercutting every gain made since 1954.*

I think that it is a convenient fiction to think that their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren will do differently than they themselves did.

When you look at the Maga hat cohort, yes, there are over 45-year-olds, but an alarmingly large cohort are 40 and under.

*Because they learned at their parents’ and their grandparents’ knees*.

In the same way that their parents and grandparents were *not* shocked and appalled at what their own parents and grandparents did.

Everybody’s white parents and grandparents marched with Martin Luther king; none of them had parents and grandparents who shouted in the faces of black non-violent protesters, upended milkshakes on their heads, were the handlers of the vicious dogs and the holders of the fire hoses.

None of them had mothers in Boston or Milwaukee or St Louis or Seattle who used their social capital to vehemently protest school and residential integration.

So if it wasn’t true; if it has not been true for the last 65 years, what makes them think that the hat in the Attic is going to evoke anything other than apathy, or even a perverse sense of pride?

Confront and comment.
