Thanks Rachel:

I love this breakdown, and for me it points to a larger issue which is: *black people are not believed*.

It is assumed that whatever we are doing is wrong or deficient or misguided.

This dynamic goes way beyond that one word.

As someone who code switches with abandon, I go back and forth with it. Sometimes I throw it in, like I throw in other words or phrases that give white people pause, to see if the light dims in their eyes when they are relating with me. For me, that is a very strong tell.

I did not know about this explanation, though I’m glad it’s here.

That said, the use of either term has validity, and I think that white people really need to look at the reasons why this ‘aha moment’ validates not just the word usage but, crucially, also the people who use it. At least sometimes. At least a little bit.

It has long been known that much od what is considered AAVE is actually a more formal, one could even say antiquated, form of english.

We are the keepers of the flame in that way.

This should be respected, not denigrated.
