Update from Our 8/19/2023 Board Meeting

The Lace on Race Center for Racial Equity Board of Directors held our most recent quarterly meeting last Saturday, August 19, on what would have been Lace’s 60th birthday, we celebrated Lace’s life over the weekend by sharing our thoughts on how she made a difference to us and to the world we see.

In our meeting, we continued to discuss how we will preserve and further her legacy. We spoke about an exciting opportunity to support and be a part of work by a woman Lace became close with over discussions of the Good Place. We will absolutely be sharing more about that as plans become firmer. We also talked about putting together a slate of content to continue to enrich our community and to hopefully begin expanding the reach of Lace’s revolutionary ideas on racial equity through relational ethics, self-work, and self-change.

Sadly, in addition to accepting a board membership resignation from Julie in the spring, we have also now accepted resignations from Rhonda and Christin. While we will miss them so much, we wish them all the best as they continue their journeys. They have all of our love and support.

This January, though, we were joined on the Board of Directors by Kelsi Watters and Dee Weinfurtner. While they’ve been doing great work with us for many months now, we realize we may not have announced their joining us, as our first quarterly meeting this year was so devastatingly and precipitously followed by losing Lace. But they deserve every recognition for how they’ve stepped up in unity with us and have been a huge part of how we the board as a whole have navigated our loss.

And last week we were joined on the board by Rebecca McClinton, who has been doing much to help out in the background, and has agreed to join us as a full voting director.

We discussed our community partner for August. We also discussed taking action to distribute some of our under-utilized Mental and Emotional Health Fund. Our August theme is “Joy”. We hope to partner with an organization promoting Black Joy, and we plan to send payments from our fund to Black activists we see making a difference, in hopes that the money will support them in doing or experiencing or purchasing something that makes them joyful.

We want to thank you, our community, for staying with us, and for your continued patience through this difficult year. Please get ready. Starting in September we hope to begin re-posting and re-encountering some of Lace’s foundational material. We feel it’s time for all of us to get back to some basics, and begin helping new walkers join us on the right foot. We hope you’re ready. We can’t wait to see you in the comment sections!
