Every word. Every word.
Read. Digest. Comment.
Edited to add:
Allow me to be clear here.
Absolutely I read the comments.
Where I feel that she hits the nail on the head is that black women creators, thinkers, and commentators are not obligated to read and digest, and, God help us, we are not obligated to internalize the hatred.
The minute we stand up and take a laser focus on the events around us and to us we become targets.
Every one of us.
And so many of us have fallen in the recent months because of this very thing.
One of them was almost me.
We have an obligation to tell the truth.
It is our holy calling.
But we are not obligated to consensually traumatize ourselves by those who look at us with contempt.
I read every single comment. Even the ones that are hateful. Even the ones that are disingenuous or just plain lies.
But that is a choice that I make in service to my own personal ethos and to the methodology of the space we are in.
But if you think even for a moment that black women and other writers and thinkers of color are somehow contractually bound to allow the worst of unbridled self-expression, condescension, and misognoyr,
Think.
Again.
