From Laura:

Here’s a thing. It’s not like the end of enslavement of Black people in America was a sophisticated and comprehensive operation to remove the disease completely, suture the incisions, and tend the patient through the healing process.

We kinda jabbed in, chopped around and grabbed what we said was most of the problem, yanked it out, and considered our work done. And we left some stuff in on purpose. Because we made money off the sickness.

Until some of the parts we left got too putrid to ignore. So we fished them out, but still didn’t bother to get them all, treat the infection that had been established pretty much before surgery, or sew up the holes we kept making.
Year by year, up to today, we keep on removing the smallest parts we can get away with, only when it gets too inconvenient to ignore them. Today’s “valued traditions” are continuations of infection and damage.

It’s all part of the same fight, whether the treatment du jour is big(-ish) and comprehensive(-ish) or specific and localized. More needs to be done by everyone across the country/world. AND rotten racist traditions, celebrations, monuments, and mindsets need to be excised and corrected where we find them.
