PIVOT.
And I will take yet another Risk by saying this: when you pivot, consider white people, yes, because they are the main culprit.
But, or rather, And.
People of color, also consider and confront this.
There is a reason why the North Star of Lace on Race includes not only white people but also *white supremacy*; people of color often act out elements of white supremacy amongst ourselves.
Yes, I know that’s hard to hear. It’s even harder to say.
But I stand by this.
So-How do we consciously and resolutely unintentionally refuse to play the toxic game that white supremacy would have us play with and between our own cohorts?
This is a big deal.
To be absolutely clear: this is in no way giving white people a pass; as noted above, white people are indeed the main and often the worst perpetrators.
But in racial justice work in 2021, we who identify as people of color also need to turn the mirror onto ourselves.
Even if enacted white supremacy between and among people of color only amounts to 10% or even only 5% of the oppression that we face, it still needs to be confronted and rooted out.
So yes, this is for everyone. Lessening and mitigating the harm endured by black and brown people is everyone’s task.
And everyone’s obligation.
Edited to add: people who identify as white are welcomed and encouraged to speak about the pivot as it pertains to white people and people of color. I’m going to ask, quite pointedly, that they do not weigh in on the dynamic between cohorts of color.
I usually don’t like to delineate Lanes. But here I will.
Those of us who identify as people of color can speak to the entire Spectrum.
I look forward to robust responses from everyone.
