Before you mourn the loss of your childhood, consider what it means to actually be truly committed to racial justice.

People say they are willing to give up things in the hypothetical, but when faced with actual loss of a very particular kind, they walk back that commitment pretty darn quickly. And yes, it’s noticed.

As with Disney, whose back catalogue is rife with racism, it’s worth interrogating this loss.

It’s easy to wave away the problematic aspects of both dr. Seuss and of Disney; many white people do.

They make excuses that they are products of their time, and that no harm was meant when they were actually first released.

They may or may not concede that they are beyond problematic now, but they argue that preservation of the catalog /canon is worth the continued toxic representation of entire groups of marginalized people.

Quite obviously, I disagree.

How does it land on black and brown people when white people insist upon preservation of images and people and attitudes that shape and reinforce negative perceptions of brown and black people even today?

Discuss. No reacts.
