Yeah feels good, but it’s not entirely accurate. Kamala, as a black woman, didn’t gain the right to vote in any significant or durable way until the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and as we have seen in every election since then voter suppression and intimidation have hindered that right, sometimes to the point of near impossibility. In terms of the box that supposedly would have forgiven her access to formally segregated schools, we are still dealing with this issue, in fact in most places of the United States schools are more segregated now in 2021 than they were in 1954. You can thank white flight and the subsequent snatching of resources to mostly white areas and redlining for that. Parenthetically, ask yourself where you live and tell yourself the truth about the racial makeup of the schools you chose for your children. Listen, I know white people want to feel that so much progress has been made, so that they can ignore the issues that are extant in the here and now. That does nothing to lessen and mitigate the harm to black and brown people perpetuated by white people and white supremacy. I don’t think it’s for nothing that most of the people who are so excited about this Meme and I’ve seen it for more than a week now, are white. Ask yourself why that is. And ask yourself why you’re allowing yourself to Exhale and think that everything is basically okay now. It isn’t. Buckle down and do the work.
