From our own Catherine Paul Seaver:
“As our Leadership Team was chatting yesterday, Dani asked if anyone had any words swirling in their heads to share about the mid-month ask. At that moment stuffed animals were being thrown around my head and my kids were hiding under mounds of clean laundry – but an idea did come to mind.
Amanda Gorman’s poem “The Hill We Climb” stuck out to me as a powerful highlight of the inauguration. She recited:
“If we’re to live up to our own time, then victory won’t lie in the blade, but in all the bridges we’ve made. That is the promise to glade, the hill we climb if only we dare it. Because being American is more than a pride we inherit; it’s the past we step into and how we repair it.” Amanda Gorman
As I’m a pretty practical person I’ve been thinking of the idea of the title “The Hill We Climb” and how to make her compelling words a reality. Because before we climb, we must walk. And walking is having skin in the game, putting in the effort, repeating the effort, continuing on.
One of the many things I’ve learned here at Lace on Race is how it is in the walking, in the doing and in the reliability that we can reduce harm to Black and brown people. So I urge you to join me in financially engaging here at Lace on Race. This is the most basic and non-negotiable way for you to join in taking essential steps towards this walking. Financial engagement is part of our Praxis.
This month alone blows me away by the value this space offers with the celebration of the Martin Luther King you may never have known, to the launch of the Lace on Race Cafe and Chef’s table. This beautiful space – and more importantly Lace’s beautiful love that seeps through this space, with prompting questions and kind candor, is unlike anything I’ve seen online. A veritable testing ground of what it means to build a community aligned with our North Star – lessening and mitigating the harm endured by Black and Brown people, perpetrated by white people – including me – and white supremacy.
Financially engage and continue walking with us.

—MESSAGE FROM LACE—-
Last Thursday – when I woke up, opened my laptop, and I encountered the new website – was one of the most satisfying, galvanizing, and humbling days of my life. Our 3-year anniversary, which will go on for quite a while, is an achievement for all of us.
As we have walked together, I have been so grateful, but also as I said in the video, I have also been so greedy. For every one of us who walks with resilient reliability, I want 10 more. And 10 more.
Our Western Star, sustainability for the long haul, is only possible because of your financial engagement. Our promise to you is to steward the funds well, in absolute alignment with our North Star. 3 years? We’re just getting started. Thank you for your engagement that allows us to look five years 10 years, 20 years down the road. To truly create a world that lessons and mitigates the harm endured by Black and brown people.
We see you. And we thank you.
