Lace on Race
Contemplating Justice Ginsburg Part 1

Okay.

I’m going to say this carefully.

I wrote a essay that will be posted up here and at Lace on Race later this morning that is basically a love letter to Justice Ginsburg.

I’m also going to write another essay that will post later today that will still be complimentary, but will also have some criticism of some choices that she made, particularly about Colin Kaepernick and her choice to stay on during Obama’s term when the she could have allowed him to appoint.

There are two, at least two, cohorts of people who are not completely enamored with her legacy.

My observations are not adversarial nor a repudiation; I think on balance she was excellent.

That said, white conservatives who vilify her are not to be lumped into the same cohort as people of color who have valid concerns about her record.

It is absolutely possible to hold both things at once.

Dismissing people with valid concerns out of hand does nothing to buttress her Legacy and is also white feminism/white supremacy.

Neither does idealizing her.

I do think that in the America we live in there seems to be only two choices: either to lionize or to demonize.

The truth is somewhere in the liminal spaces.

And that is where I am lightly dancing right now as I contemplate her Legacy and contemplate the second essay.

Look for them both later today.
