Pandemic Pods! Plus A Plethora Of Other Plentiful And Problematic Proclivities

Dear Community, this conversation is carried over from the conversation that mysteriously disappeared.

We are broadening it to other issues of privilege as well, so that everyone can do the requisite amount of self-examination and self-reflection.

My comments are below; queries are embedded.

Okay. So let’s talk about it.

But let’s also now that we’ve got this unplanned opportunity, we can also look at privilege in general and what money buys you to either opt-in or opt-out of a shared communal Civic life.

It’s not just about the pandemic pods, it’s also about gated communities.

It’s also about being able to have someone shop for you while you stay home, it’s also having the Courier take the paperwork to and from your office so that you can stay home, in short, it’s about anything that we allow ourselves to either opt into or opt out of at the expense of another cohort.

I am broadening this out because quite a few of us don’t have kids and for us this is an intellectual exercise at best, but I don’t want to let anybody off the hook here.

Where are the places where you flex your privilege, and where you know that it is to someone else’s detriment that you do?

Do you do it anyway and then make up for it in other places?

This brings to mind the nature of money itself.

Money doesn’t just buy things.

Money buys comfort and convenience and access, and it’s these soft privileges that actually mean more than if you drive a Lexus versus a Hyundai or if you’ve got six bedrooms instead of three.

Let’s have this widened conversation, because fewer of you will be able to hold it at arm’s length if we do.
