The main reason universal basic income won’t ever happen in the U.S.– aside from the dogged worship of unregulated capitalism by the government, businesses, and citizens–is that a significant portion of the white populace would rather self-sabotage/self-harm than get on board with a policy that would help Black and Brown people, too.

Did you know that things we consider basic today, like Social Security and other government programs, only passed because it was politically promised to only help white people?

As evidence, I point to “Franklin Roosevelt’s social security state — was passed, Porter argues (following lines of thought developed by the political scientist Ira Katznelson), only by a devil’s bargain with Southern segregationist senators. Liberal social security systems perpetuated black exclusion until Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society reforms of 1964.
