From MaKensie Mack:

Unless you are Black, I don’t believe you can understand what losing so much Black life to the racist structures of our government really feels like. Black and Native communities and undocumented immigrants in the U.S. are most acutely impacted by the government’s refusal to care and invest in our health and wellbeing. In the U.S. the reality which existed long before COVID-19 remains the same. The people who are considered true Americans are the citizens whose nationality marker does not carry a dash.

The fact that we’ve had long-standing healthcare deserts in Black communities is showing us that the healthcare disparities are working as they have been designed to. We experience an urgent crisis like COVID-19 and the poorest and most vulnerable in our communities can’t get to the doctor, are refused testing, and with no moratorium on rent or utilities are forced to continue to go to work every day and be exposed to a virus that is killing us and our people at alarming rates.

This is healthcare disparity. This is healthcare bias and it has been working for white people and white communities for a very long time while leaving our people and our communities fraught with the ultimate underlying condition: structural racism and white supremacy.
