I have many, MANY thoughts about this fire – and especially this fire in the context of all of the other places that are burning right now. As I parse them out I’ll share (or not).

But this commentary allowed me to breathe more freely once I read it and so I decided to share. Thank you for the oxygen, Kat. <3 "One by one today, I’m seeing news that the specific pieces of Notre Dame that people care about were not destroyed, as was feared yesterday. And I notice how so many people knew, without an explanatory list, what the treasures of Notre Dame were. Not because these people were especially sophisticated or educated, but because it’s “common knowledge”. And what is excluded from common knowledge by media inattention and by what is included in the formal canon. This is why we say that media depictions matter, that accurate representation matters, that yes, how you spend your energy matters. It’s easy to say “it’s not zero sum” but the amount of energy necessary to explain is *itself* about the disproportion and marginalization. “I care because I have that connection...” Yeah. We know. We know how you don’t have connections that make you care about the things that affect us — and that when you try by comparing something you’ve experienced to what we’re discussing, we often react angrily because the impact is so different. We need you to have space for things that you don’t experience or have connection to, to understand that there *IS* a significant gap between us. This is not about shaming your display of grief.
