Speech is a vehicle for communication.
AAVE is not a dented car with a funky drivetrain; it is a valid mode of expression, formed from the ashes of oppression and separation. It is a creative adaptation.
English has morphed over time, particularly in America, and not just in marginalized communities; only clutching one’s pearls re word choice, cadence, inflection and structure and only grimacing when the accent grates is elitist at best and a lazy and inaccurate proxy for class and education–which are, at bottom, proxies for ultimate worth.
Using it well, and with respect for and attention to, the audience, is less of a dog whistle than a shorthand for connection and shared experience–which AOC authentically has.
