Ok, now that it’s official and all, we can tell you:
We have been invited to present at the Social Justice Symposium at Cal State San Marcos. The working title: Internal Work, External Praxis.
If any of you in the San Diego/Orange County/Riverside area want to attend, you can! I will drop the information here.
Our model is being recognized. The work continues. We will keep walking. Thanks everyone, for your support.
Here is a synopsis of the proposal:
Learning Outcomes:
Appreciating the need to acknowledge that the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ of activism is as important as the ‘what’
Appreciating and harnessing the value of community; we cannot do this work alone
Learning how to overcome bias, resistance, and ambivalence in the self to become a more effective and thoughtful activist.
Learning how to discern one’s motivations for doing the work.
Discovering and articulating one’s core values
Learning how to insure that one’s values line up with the work
Learning how to develop ‘reliable resilience’; to do the work in sustainable ways
Description of Presentation:
How do we become reliable and resilient as we serve with our activism? This workshop will help you in your efforts to be a more effective activist and ally.
The ‘how’ and the why’ of activism is at least as important as the work and who we are and how we do what we do are at least crucial as any event we stage or program we run.
Too often, we focus on action, and not enough on the internal processes and the relational ethics involved in truly transformative work. As a result we are often frustrated by what seems like lack of effectiveness, as well as by the people with whom we do the work. Here we talk about accessing internal strengths, and confronting internal barriers to doing the work well and with intention. Good praxis, done with faithfulness and stamina and curiosity, is needed more than ever in these times of change.
Presentation Outline:
The focus will be on locating our internal strengths; identifying barriers to effective work, and relationships with Other that enhance and not detract, from the work. There will be handouts so that people can do assessments of where they are, and will also feature a group discussion of best practices.
How does this workshop session relate to our theme “Power. Action. Healing. Transforming the CSUSM Landscape”:
In order to effect the three words, we must focus on what we bring to the table in our own lives, and be self aware enough of what needs to be buttressed in our interior selves. We need to have healthy personal power (agency), tools to learn to do action from a place of love and long range vision, and how to mediate burnout and relational issues with others. How we heal ourselves is a microcosm of how we approach the work of healing the world.
