This is illuminating. And infuriating. The most candid, and deeply disturbing sentence?
‘The problem is that judges give breaks to people with whom they can identify—people whose humanity they recognize.’
Really reflect on that. As a person whose humanity always comes with an asterisk, it is inevetable that my engagement with the State, from the court system, down to police and sheriff, down to the mall security guard (Remember my encounter with Macy’s last year?) will be fraught.
That is why we must look beyond individual actions by singular picture and keep our eyes focused on the systemic and the institutional.
