An open letter to my friends and followers at Lace on Race and on my personal page:
For the sake of my liberation and emotional and intellectual safety and effectiveness, I will be allowing my personal page, Lace Janine Watkins, to go dormant.
The new name for the personal page will be simple: Lace Watkins. I may invite people I know would be amenable; but for the most part I will allow people to opt in.
Followers who think this that was Lace on Race,
Welp.
It isn’t.
For all of you:
Come to the actual Lace on Race, and then, for the love of Mike and for the sake of your own congruence, actually support the community and the commentary if you actually want it to survive.
Today was my last straw. I am tired of being both endlessly consumed and painfully erased and discarded.
This ends today.
I would rather have 100 faithful fellow walkers than 4000 voyeurs.
I will gladly and gratefully continue this work.
But not under these conditions and not with this dynamic.
There are literally hundreds of people working in the racial justice arena.
They will ask less, or differently, than I do.
That’s fine.
But if you truly want to walk with me, it simply cannot be the way 3900 of you have insisted upon doing it: from a 10,000 foot perch with binoculars and fruit snacks.
There are places for that too.
I have asked much from you. I have the audacity to insist on both my value and my vision.
So if you do feel that Lace on Race is worth your effort, go there intentionally and often, connect with community, and tangibly support the space you say you value.
I am tired. But there is still work to do.
So I will keep walking.
I hope you will too.
