Racist? Yep.
Sexist? Yup.

The history of dehumanizing black people by equating them with lesser mammals is deep and long. We have been called apes, heifers, and yes, canines.

When Donald Trump called his ex-aide a dog, he didn’t need a whistle. This blatantly racist hearkening to centuries of considering black skin subhuman cannot be explained away.

The only question is what we do with it, and why it still carries so much historical weight.
