LoR FB Page – Can Your ‘Ally’ Want Things You Don’t? – 229210101066138

This is important for us–for me especially, because I have been internally wrestling with this very thing–for a few reasons.

One, because the term ‘ally’, like many terms in the social justice sphere, has morphed over time. The article breaks it down well.

As well, because it has become so very fraught, it needs to be discussed in this space. What do we, the community of Lace on Race, what do we mean when we say it? Is it identity, or is it a verb? Where are the boundaries? Where is the role of dissent?

Is ‘ally’ synonymous with ‘friend’? Does there have to be a level of affection, however broadly defined, for the term to be valid? Put another way, do you have to like me to stand with me?

And is ‘ally’ synonymous with ‘all encompassing’? Are there ever places where one can buy into most, or even only some, of the aims, principles, motivations and actions of the group with whom one might be aligned, or is it binary? Accept and incorporate all, or get off the road?

These are questions that I feel are not being asked nearly enough. This article will hopefully be a springboard for reflection and candid commentary.
