This will be a tough, but necessary conversation.

Feminism, for all of its virtues and accomplishments, and for all its validity as a stance and a practice that should be shared by all, is not without stain.

The article presented here speaks to that. It speaks, unsparingly, of the fact that modern day feminism has anti-blackness baked into its very premise, and that the movement was and is only partially embracing of the struggles of women of color.

Here, where the subject is race and liberation and agency and inclusion, the critique of the early foundational women of the movement, and the actions and attitudes that they embodied is especially relevant.

How we look at the history frames our present, and our future, as we all look at what liberty, freedom, equity and justice look like, and how we are going to be able to be discerning and surgical about what we take forward from an imperfect movement.

The racial justice struggle of the present day must be different from the struggles it is informed by; as people here in this space dedicated to doing new things in new ways, we are charged here to unpack what residue we may have from movements that preceded us, confront them with unflinching candor, so the work we do going forward, imperfect as it will be, will be closer to the world we all say we want to construct.

As well, be sure to read, and if you feel so moved, to register your own feelings, in the comments section of the article; which, from the very first (curated and approved by the NYT) post, is dripping with ‘not all white women’ and ‘contextualization’. The need to refuse honest critique is strong.
