I am posting this here, because I feel that it is oh so very important that you see all sides of me. I know that many of you low key look up to me. I do my best to honor that. But you need to know this; that not every day is a triumph. This day certainly was not. But the value of the day is–or is not–best measured in the integrity of my actions.
Almost twenty years ago, I was privileged to be part of a panel on integrity. Part of my opening presentation was in detailing what makes an integral act. For the first five elements, I used the ones from the great book ‘Integrity’ by Stephen L. Carter. They are: 1) determine what needs to be done; 2) decide that you will do it; 3) say out loud what you are going to do; 4) do the action; 5) say you did it. I added one more, which a lot of people refuse to do, and it’s the hardest–6) take whatever heat comes from it.
Community, we are not, we are not guaranteed positive outcome for positive actions. All too many people feel that they are. In the world we live in here, that of racial justice, we will be called to the above standard often. We need to remember all 6 elements. Sometimes all six will flow easily. Other times they will not. All six must be in place.
I was reminded of this today. May my words stay in congruence with my actions and motivations. May I be worthy of your esteem, when I am lying low, as well as when I am riding high. My promise to the community is that I will do the same for each of you.
With Love,
Your Lace
