Ok.
This is an important read.
That said, it’s also incredibly problematic.
I would request that everyone read the article, not only with an eye on what I’ve been talking about for a long time–medical disparities and to the systematic and institutional racism that guides outcomes, but also at the article itself, looking at the embedded racism classism and colorism that are incredibly apparent.
I would ask that we all look at the descriptors, some of which are gratuitous, and also at the overall tone.
This is what we have to do a lot of because even as we’re looking at valid information we are also inundated with under the radar vibes that undermine what should have been, and for the most part still is, a valuable message.
The reader will leave with two very different and also competing perceptions: sympathy for mother, and also a sense of top-down ness and a sense of annoyance and a reinforced sense of class based superiority and entrenched personal racism.
There’s no such thing as a neutral news source.
Even the ones, sometimes especially the ones, who are considered the standard.
