Lace on Race
Lace on the ACE (broadly related)
Hanging this video here. It’s not talking about the ACE per se, but rather Type II diabetes in developing world countries, in this case India.
Some very important findings, that have to do with poverty, and to a somewhat lesser extent, on race.
Here in the West (hate that term), diseases like heart disease, lung disease, diabetes and the like are often known as ‘behavioral diseases’; that is, the person with the disease either did something they shouldn’t have (like smoking) or failed to do something (like eat well).
This video speaks to something else. People place a lot less moral stigma on Type I diabetes, which is usually early onset. Type II, however, comes on line later (though, these days, earlier and earlier). There is more shame and much more blame with it.
I know. I have Type II, and have struggled with the shame part of the diagnosis as much as I have struggled with the disease itself.
How these clinicians are dealing with the disease, how they are framing it, i think is important.
